About this artwork

Onelio endeavored to convey our culture's modern fixation with our phones. "It seems that wherever we are, we feel compelled to 'stay connected' even at the expense of missing the moments that surround us," he says. "I am mystified that even when accompanied by close friends in attractive settings, so many people just can't ignore their phones." In this painting, he contrasts the rustic pavilion with its cheerful lanterns and the electric glow of the young lady's phone screen.
