About this artwork

This artwork is from Yelena's "Still Life" series, depicting an autumn still life of pears and pomegranates in an abstracted landscape. Yelena created this piece alongside her husband and fellow UGallery artist, Stanislav Sidorov. Stanislav painted his own interpretation of the scene, also titled "Still Life with Fruits," which you can view in his portfolio. Notice the subtle difference in angle, and elements included and excluded. The two pieces would make for great companions.

This piece is made using dyes and acrylic paints on Chinese silk. When applied, liquid dyes and paints quickly flow across the silk. In order to halt this movement, a material called a resist is used, which stops the dyes from spreading and creates strong lines, shapes, and details. Once the painting is completed, the surface is steamed to make the dyes bright and color-fast. "I like silk painting for its softness, shimmer and brilliant colors," says Yelena.
