About this artwork

Gary Leonard begins his expressionist portraits by shooting lots of reference photographs of his model. He then searches through the images to find a specific inspiration. "Each work has an objective," he explains. "Sometimes it's developing a composition with specific colors or contrast. Sometimes it's a feeling. Sometimes I will try many compositions before I find what I am looking for, and sometimes it happens right away."
