About this artwork

Artist John Kelly displays a realist portrait of a masked Venetian model during Carnivale. He draws reference from witnessing her carrying a feisty blue parrot just outside of San Marco and convincing her to sit for a painting. The pandemic was still raging, and Venice had been hit particularly hard, making the scene particularly solemn, says John. The strong color of her costume and the jewel-like parrot plumes emerges out of the dense shadow, creating a searing dramatic spectacle.
