The male cardinal is very territorial and protects his breeding space from any male that comes his way. Depicted are the bright red male with the muted colored female bird perched on branches. The surrounding white and gray portray the cold winter landscape where these birds are often seen. This piece is on a gallery wrapped canvas and the painting continues around the sides.
