About this artwork

Musicians play under the cool glow of lights in a dimly lit jazz club, while empty tables and chairs in the foreground suggest an intimate setting. The artwork began as a contemplation of color, often associated with introspection, calm, or sadness. While painting, artist Keith Thomson listened to a podcast that explained the musical term "blues" originated from the phrase "blue devils," a common 17th-century expression for melancholy. The term evolved and shortened when African American musicians in the South began creating a distinct style of music that expressed personal hardship, sorrow, and resilience, especially post-emancipation.
