About this artwork
Cranes are one of the symbolic creatures in Asia, says artist Tomo Mori. Mysterious and always a little lonely in a beautiful way. I painted a dreamy crane with traditional Japanese Kimono patterns in the background and covered it with mosaic-like squares. Tomo calls this technique 'canvas mosaic' which she developed over many years. The square shapes are cut and painted pieces of canvas fabric that are adhered to the stretched canvas. Initially inspired by digital pixels, but harkens back to traditional mosaic making.
