About this artwork

This is a fairly straightforward work, with an uncomplicated composition, consisting of strong horizontals broken by a single vertical. The piece is really about color — bright color applied thickly with mostly wide brushes. It is reminiscent of similar works by de Vlaminck, who painted many sailing scenes. The underpainting here is Venetian red, which can be seen in some places and gives the work an extra bit of warmth. The sides are painted brown, and it comes ready to hang.
