Zeynep Genc | Artist Profile Photo
Zeynep Genc
West New York, New Jersey
Artist Zeynep Genc explores the interaction between modern urban landscapes and the transitions of nature in her paintings. Her subjects center around Northeastern American settings, themes related to her profession, and experiences from her travels to different countries. As an interior architect and industrial designer, my selective perception influences how I experience the surroundings and find beauty in the synchronicity of architectural and natural elements, says Zeynep. Originally from Ankara, Turkey, her career spanned more than thirty years, during which she taught interior design at Bilkent University and Middle East Technical University. She relocated to New Jersey in 2015 and has been painting ever since. Zeynep works in the corner of her well-lit and organized living room, listening to Italian baroque music while enjoying coffee. She spends her summers in Bodrum, Turkey, where her house sits next to the beautiful Aegean Sea. When not creating art, she frequents museums and galleries, prepares healthy Mediterranean meals, and enjoys quality time with her family.

Artist Statement

My paintings capture snapshots of the places I've lived or traveled to, reflecting my deep appreciation for nature and architecture. I aim to depict the interplay between modern architectural landscapes and natural elements, finding inspiration in the Northeastern American landscape's diversity. I'm particularly fascinated by the changing seasons and the transformations they bring to trees. My compositions explore the interaction between natural and architectural elements, offering viewers a perspective on modern landscapes through my figurative artistic approach. Before starting a composition, I spend time working on photos, adjusting figures, scaling, sketching, and designing color schemes. My interest in art history and fine arts stems from my university days, where I was inspired by Northern European artists who revolutionized the fine arts in the early 20th century. German Expressionists like Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, August Macke, and Gabriele Münter have always been a significant influence. Additionally, contemporary artists such as Alex Katz, David Hockney, Peter Doig, and Avni Arbas continue to inspire me.
