Yamilet Sempe | Artist Profile Photo
Yamilet Sempe
Omaha, Nebraska
Artist Yamilet Sempe paints boldly graphic abstracts, visibly influenced by modernist aesthetics. A keen believer in the power of signs, she incorporates symbols of mysticism and spirituality in her work. Her compositions feature dramatic palettes—intentionally using orange to represent enthusiasm and positivity. I am only an instrument of the creator, says Yamilet. Spending her formative years in Cuba and France, she immersed herself in the presence and influence of renowned artists of culture. After years of working as a veterinary nurse, it was not until her mid-forties she chose to dedicate her time to painting, her true passion. She migrated to Florida and devoted herself to her practice, working at her home studio neighboring the coast. Yamilet splits her time between the United States and Paris, allowing her shared vision of diverse cultures. Her work has been featured in esteemed exhibitions in Europe and the USA.

Artist Statement

I express myself through several artistic languages, with abstract and geometric being the most recognized. One of my distinct abilities is to break down geometric forms into abstract compositions while remaining faithful to my chosen color palette. Inspired by visions that I believe come from the hereafter, I infuse my work with both figurative and spiritual elements. Though I've always had a passion for drawing nature, it wasn't until the age of 46 that I fully embraced painting, a passion I had suppressed for many years. The creation of my first geometric piece, Cardinal at my Window, served as a significant turning point, as shortly after completing it, a cardinal appeared at my window. Another notable work, Moon Dreams, features a black cat gazing at the moon, and its significance deepened when I encountered a black cat named Omalé by the sea, whom I consider my protector. My artistic journey is characterized by a succession of signs and mystical messages, evident in works such as Invocation to Pandora, Divine Light, and The Temple. Drawing inspiration from artists like Hilma Af Klint, Kandinsky, and Mondrian, as well as the Bauhaus movement, I explore the intersections of geometry, abstraction, and spirituality. My work is deeply personal and spiritual, driven by a quest for answers and a connection to higher realms. I often create geometric mandalas on millimeter paper, inspired by the healing practices of Emma Kunz, believing in their therapeutic power. The colors I use are deliberate choices, with orange symbolizing enthusiasm and passion, reflecting my personality traits. Circles, representing the Rose of Jericho, my favorite flower, symbolize rebirth and the interconnectedness of art, nature, and life. In my creative process, I see myself as a vessel for divine inspiration, connecting with spiritual guides in a trance-like state to produce artwork with unwavering conviction and precision.
