Tom Tillcott
DUN LAOGHAIRE, Ireland
Artist Tom Tillcott paints teddy bears, bringing their warmth and nostalgia to life. His brother once gave him a small box wrapped in a golden ribbon. Inside, Tom found his childhood teddy bear, which had been missing for 40 years. The sight of it flooded him with memories. He placed it in his studio and began to paint. "I want to convey happiness and energy through the smiling faces of my teddy bears," says Tom. He fell in love with cartoons at a young age, especially those in The New Yorker magazine. He now paints in his small, sunlit studio in South Dublin, Ireland, and moves his easel to the garden in warmer months. When not doing art, Tom likes to explore cities like Rome, New York, and San Francisco, drawn to their architecture and museums.

Artist Statement
From an early age, I was drawn to the world of illustration, inspired by the wit and charm of The New Yorker cartoons. This passion led me to work in editorial illustration for economic newspapers, shaping my artistic perspective.
Travel has been a significant influence on my work, especially my time exhibiting in Japan, where I immersed myself in the country’s rich culture, design, and gastronomy.
In my Ireland studio, music often accompanies my creative process, its rhythm influencing the movement of my brush. Using knives and spatulas, I build texture and depth, capturing the essence of my subjects—especially the illusion of fur—with dynamic, expressive strokes.
