Thomas Hoerber
Port Hueneme, California
Artist Thomas Hoerber brings his lifelong experience as a make-up artist to his watercolor paintings. "I am drawn to the historical and the weathered because I find beauty in their character," says Thomas. Following his retirement from a 45-year career in the TV and film industry, he finds endless inspiration on the rugged California coast. His focus on painting different kinds of boats is inspired by all the time he spent fishing with his grandfather. Additionally, his motivation to capture coastal scenes stems from day trips to waterside cities and memories of deep-sea fishing, motorcycle riding, and exploring hidden corners of the region. He paints in a well-lit corner of his living room, adjacent to his backyard garden, where he occasionally takes a quick break. When not painting, Thomas enjoys watching baseball, reading, and walking on nearby beaches.

Artist Statement
I worked for 45 years as a make-up artist in the TV and film industry until retirement afforded me the freedom to express myself through watercolor painting, utilizing the rugged California coast as inspiration. Having always been drawn to the meditative process of art-making, I also enjoy day trips to coastal cities to take photographs that serve as inspiration for my art. I am drawn to the old, the historical, and the weathered. My art documents a lifetime of memories spent deep sea fishing, motorcycle riding, surfing, and exploring the hidden nooks and crannies of California.
My style has evolved over time as I continue to gain inspiration from artists featured in watercolor magazines. I now mostly use wet into wet and am experimenting with the intersection of realism and abstraction. In this way, I can highlight the aging details of a ship, pier, or building, while evoking the otherworldly feel of walking through fog, tasting sea spray, or witnessing a private coastal sunset.
