Rebecca Klementovich | Artist Profile Photo
Rebecca Klementovich
Somersworth, New Hampshire
Artist Rebecca Klementovich paints expressionist views of the New England landscape. Merging her lifelong interest in fashion, she co-founded the group Femme Fatales of the North. "We are painting in gowns on the tops of mountains and slapping paint on canvases," says Rebecca. "We are an example of who the northern women are as artists." Her colorful palette and gestural style are influenced by her long career in the fashion world. Rebecca studied fashion illustration at FIT in New York and worked as a textile designer and art director for over twenty years. After leaving New York, she moved to northern New Hampshire near Mount Washington. "The mountains are nostalgic and lyrical, and this greatly affected my landscapes." Today, she spends many hours observing the fields, forest, sky, and the changing seasons.

Artist Statement

I'm always trying to express the nostalgia, imagery, and feelings the mountains provoke in me and how they are so beautiful and mysterious. My other subject is trees, such as the small spaces the limbs make, the wind moving their branches, or the light peeking through their leaves.

There are 1,000 miles of forests and mountains where I live. I spend many hours observing the fields, change of sky color, and seasons here in Northern, New Hampshire. I am always trying to make these objects move or express themselves.

I am fascinated with the painting process, and where it takes me. I paint very loosely and partly abstractly so I can find any nuggets of unexpected strokes or color combinations to make the painting more alive. The more gestural the piece, the faster the painting process flies.
