Rashid Kulbatyrov | Artist Profile Photo
Rashid Kulbatyrov
Almaty, Kazakhstan
Artist Rashid Kulbatyrov paints watercolor impressionist scenes of Kazakhstan and his travels. His work pays homage to the traditions and customs of being part of the Great Steppe, seen through a modern lens. Rashid challenges himself to experiment with various styles and techniques—expressiveness, bright colors, and movement appearing most evident. Most of my work possesses dynamic paint application in various color schemes, but I show no indifference to monochromatic palettes, says Rashid. His multicultural exposure gives him limitless inspiration, gathering insight from everywhere he visits and everyone he meets. Formulations of different forms and color combinations make up his compositions. He works at his studio in his hometown of Almaty, a small but cozy creative space. A radio accompanies him and his activities during the creation of his works. Rashid produces his work with relaxed but decisive brush strokes, sometimes with the addition of a palette knife. Arising a deep love for his roots, he aims to share the sacredness and beauty of his culture. He has been hailed as one of the most influential artists in Kazakhstan, whose works have been evaluated at the highest level in European countries. He enjoys traveling to other countries with his family on creative pauses to further help him gather new creative ideas.

Artist Statement

As an artist from a great steppe, my work is about the traditions and customs of my nation and its interpretation in a modern way. Most of my works use relaxed brushstrokes of pure color, the dynamics of applying a paint layer, and various color schemes. I prefer bright and rich colors when I paint figures, surroundings, and people. My landscapes are always sunny, always subject to a major chord. Also, I am not indifferent to the monochrome color palette in my watercolor and city panoramas.   I introduce myself as an artist who is experimenting with various genres and techniques. That’s why I take inspiration everywhere from places I have visited, cities, people, and the environment. The majority of my works are illustrated in realism, but later I started to show them in abstract technique. My technique is unique and people recognize it when they see paintings that are developed by decisive brush strokes and palette knife strokes, which simply solve the problem of form and color, convincingly creating the space of the painting.   I intend to address visitors through my works about the great steppe’s sacredness and beauty. Working easily and masterfully with a brush, I want to convince people that we are closely related to our roots and in real life do not notice the signs of the past. In my newest works, the realism balance has been replaced by an impression of spontaneity. The spontaneity in my thoughts is an act of transformation.
