Nick Savides | Artist Profile Photo
Nick Savides
Brooklyn, New York
Nick learned to paint from his mother when he was a child, but it wasn’t until college that he decided to be a career artist. His realist images of New York City are inspired by the drama of the city–the changing light, the spontaneous magic. Nick begins his process with reference photographs from his daily life, often shooting the same scene at multiple times of the day. He brings the images back to his Brooklyn studio where he composes a scene in Photoshop, adding and subtracting elements from multiple photographs to achieve the perfect composition before beginning to paint. “As my artwork is realistic, one might be tempted to think they are copies from nature,” says the artist. “Really, they are composed–every detail is considered. It is a balance between what is seen, what is true to nature, and what can make a good painting.”

Artist Statement

My paintings have a calming effect but with a quiet intensity. They have a stillness as if time was slowed down and then suspended. I’m inspired by the effects of light and the drama created by light. Influenced by artists such as Johannes Vermeer and Edward Hopper, I strive to create paintings that capture a sense of time and place, making that moment eternal. They draw you in with the familiar and invite you to interpret the story behind them. The artistic process mirrors life's journey—a quest for discovery and expression. Each painting I make is a stop on that journey I want to share and connect to. My paintings are inspired by the people I’ve known and the places I’ve lived and traveled to. I am interested in the relationship between people and their environment. Although they are often set in public spaces and feature well-known icons, each is a deeply personal statement that celebrates the beauty of nature and humanity.
