Nancy Hughes Miller
Cary, North Carolina
Reflected in Nancy Hughes Miller’s paintings are the coastal and rural environments of southeastern North Carolina, her birthplace, where she still spends much of her time. As a child, Nancy’s primary education did not include art classes, so she was delighted when one day her oldest brother returned home from college with newsprint and charcoal. She went on to pursue a career path in graphic design and fine arts. Now a full-time artist, Nancy experiments with vibrant colors and fluid forms to create her non-traditional, painterly landscapes. She enjoys working with oils, a medium that dries slowly and lends itself nicely to blending. Nancy strives to produce artwork that is, according to her, “quiet, yet bold.”

Artist Statement
Reflected in my art are the coastal and rural environments of southeastern North Carolina, my birthplace, where I still spend much of my time. I enjoy the freedom of painting these and other places from memory and imagination—not strictly adhering to realism or photographic references. With oil paints, I explore color and light, shapes and forms, while rendering a contemporary nontraditional landscape. My paintings strive to be "bold yet quiet", serene, and soothing. Experimenting, learning, evolving, expressing—to me, that's what it means to be an artist.
