Misato Nakajima | Artist Profile Photo
Misato Nakajima
Suginami Ku, Tokyo-to, Japan
Tokyo-based artist Misato Nakajima paints in a simple, approachable style, aiming to capture the uniqueness and innate goodness of each person. As a fashion model, he draws inspiration from the individuality and personalities observed in each show. I find myself at ease with simple paintings as I want to express a universal feeling, like happiness, says Misato. His artistic journey began with a familial tie to art through his grandmother and was reignited during university with the thoughtful gift of oil-based markers from a friend. Working in a modest yet comfortable studio, he starts his day by cleaning and listening to a Japanese radio program. Beyond art, Misato maintains a disciplined life, engaging in activities like reading books and watching movies to sustain his creative energy. Looking ahead, he aspires to expand his creative footprint beyond Japan onto the international stage.

Artist Statement

I want people to realize the uniqueness and goodness of every human being. I believe that since I started working as a fashion model, I have had more opportunities to notice the individuality of faces and get in touch with their inner personalities. I thought that the portraits taken when deciding on the look for a fashion show were all the most natural and beautiful. It was a feeling that made me realize that being natural is as cool as being dressed up for a fashion show. My works are inspired by portrait photos. Because of my OCD, I find myself at ease with simple paintings. I want to paint pictures expressing a universal feeling, like simple happiness. It is my will to put what I think is good and universal in the frame of the canvas.
