Leslie Ann Butler | Artist Profile Photo
Leslie Ann Butler
Portland, Oregon
Abstract painter Leslie Ann Butler has been passionate about making art since she was a child. “In grade school I did a portrait of Robert Frost and sent it to him, and received a nice letter of thanks,” Leslie Ann recalls. Though she still enjoys creating figurative work, Leslie Ann is also intrigued by abstraction. She describes creating abstract work as entering an altered state of consciousness. Often the compositions will come to her during meditation, and she does her best to reproduce the vision in the studio. Leslie Ann works from the top floor of her Portland home, where she gets lots of natural light and a view of the city.

Artist Statement

In my work I explore the possibility of a place of peace by offering to make sense of the world's dualities of joy and suffering. Using form, texture, composition and color I seek to express a visual evolution with the contrast of disruption and calm. Darkness flows into the light, excitation transforms itself into composure and the result is balanced energy. The creative process does not end with the physicality of the painting, but is continued and enhanced through the eyes of each beholder into the creation of thoughts and emotions it brings out in them; this magic dance of connection is proof that we are not separate.

I work with acrylic paint; gold, silver and copper leaf, charcoal and oil pastels. When I paint, I create a channel of connection, combining form, color and pattern with soul and spirit. The spirit reflects my recognition of the profound beauty and excitement in all living things and a deep respect and appreciation for their existence. I use bold strokes and an energetic dance of color to communicate my passion for life. The canvas becomes my world, upon which I pour my deepest emotions.
