Karin Johannesson | Artist Profile Photo
Karin Johannesson
Waterloo, Canada
Artist Karin Johannesson paints delicate watercolors showing flowers of every season. Her fresh impressionist style captures the elegance of fleeting flora. As a self-trained artist, instinct guides her when using her medium in unconventional ways. My process is spontaneous and intuitive - I like to work quickly and complete my paintings in one or two sittings, says Karin. She listens to music as she paints at her home studio in Canada, where things can occasionally get messy. But she likes to organize her workspace once everything dries. Her loose brushwork draws influence from minimalism, abstract, and pop culture. To relax, she relishes fine dining, piano playing, and Zumba. Karin also works as an art teacher and a mother of two, where her young sons' artistic talents inspire her as she creates new work. Karin's pieces have been featured in The Watercolor Ideas Book and A Watercolor a Day: 365 Tips and Ideas for Improving Your Skills and Creativity.

Artist Statement

Growing up in Waterloo, Ontario, I've always been drawn to the expressive power of art. From a young age, I've been fascinated by the ability of colors and shapes to evoke emotions and tell stories. My artistic journey has continuously explored mediums and techniques, guided by instinct and a desire to experiment. As a self-taught artist, I've embraced the freedom to break away from traditional boundaries. I find joy in using materials in unconventional ways, letting my intuition guide the creative process. My work is often spontaneous, taking shape in quick, intuitive bursts of energy. My inspiration stems from a diverse range of sources. The artistic prowess of my two young sons constantly amazes me, reminding me of the limitless possibilities of creativity. Traditional Asian art, minimal abstract art, and popular culture also feed my artistic hunger. In recent times, I've been particularly drawn to the renewed popularity of watercolor, a medium that embodies the fluidity and vibrancy of my artistic vision. The unpredictable nature of watercolor allows for unexpected transformations, capturing the essence of spontaneity and fluidity that resonates with my creative spirit.
