Jaime Ellsworth | Artist Profile Photo
Jaime Ellsworth
Friday Harbor, Washington
Artist Jaime Ellsworth offers charming portrayals of animals, depicting both the familiar inhabitants of her corral and those rarely seen on San Juan Island in the Pacific Northwest. My career as a cowhand never took off, so I am glad I stumbled into art, as it still complements my passion, says Jaime. In each of her works, Jaime invites the viewer to appreciate the image's simplicity and encourages them to explore beyond the details, prompting their imagination. Alongside the straightforward shapes, her compositions convey a sense of narrative through the expressions and movements of the figures. Jaime works in her studio attached to a small barn, where her dogs, donkeys, and horses keep her company while she paints. Beyond painting, Jaime explores the outdoors with her pets and volunteers to aid animals locally and internationally.

Artist Statement

I specialize in painting animals. While most of my subjects are my own, I've recently broadened my horizons to include bears and other creatures not commonly found on San Juan Island, which I've called home. My paintings are built up with layers of oil or acrylic paint, starting with a bold, limited palette of colors. As I add subsequent layers, the under-paint peeks through, and transparent glazes give the final surface a subtle tint. With each piece, I aim to invite viewers to appreciate the simplicity of the image while also encouraging them to look beyond, unlocking the door to their imagination.
