Artist David Thelen captures the daily life and landscapes he observes in his home and during his travels across the state of New York. When searching for ideas, he embarks on long drives along the scenic back roads of the Finger Lakes region to seek natural scenes and objects with compelling stories to tell. His artwork reflects his bold interpretation of the ever-changing human intervention in nature. David earned his bachelor's degree in Fine Arts in 1994 and has been on a continuous creative journey ever since. He ventured into illustration, woodcarving, and stained glass artistry. David works in his cozy and often cluttered studio, located within the renovated enclosed porch at the back of his house. In his spare time, David delves into drawing and sculpting, exploring its various traditional and digital techniques.
Artist Statement
Since an early age, I have been creating art in some form or another, and throughout the years have honed my skills through practice and teachings. I have explored all forms of art from sculpting, wood carving and wood working, illustration, to stained glass. After and during the exploration there was always painting - it is something that moves me and changes me.
My oil paintings are defined by a bold interpretation of the ever changing and human intervention in the landscape. I describe my main subject by painting the space around it rather than focusing on painting the object itself. Deep tones and bold contrast lead the eye to the uniqueness to be found in the texture, pattern and line.
