Brit J Oie
Weaverville, North Carolina
Artist Brit J Oie grew up in a small town on the west coast of Norway, where nature was her playground and creativity a way of life. "The men in my family were woodworkers, and the women did knitting, sewing, and weaving," says Brit. She began her artistic journey as a weaver in Norway, but after marrying an American and moving to the U.S., she transitioned to painting and pursued further studies in Fine Art. In 1998, Brit earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of North Carolina, marking a shift in her creative path. During her senior exhibition, she developed a unique mixed-media technique, blending embossed papers and acrylic paint—an evolution of the styles she had mastered. Today, Brit works in a light-filled studio in Asheville's River Arts District, with her art featured in private collections across the U.S. and Norway, as well as the University of North Carolina, Asheville. Outside the studio, she enjoys hiking, gardening, relaxing in outdoor hot springs, and taking in the river view.

Artist Statement
The natural environment has always given me a strong sense of peace, comfort, and mind-blowing awe. I often take inspiration from specific locations, using photos taken on walks in nature as reference points. Still, I think of my mixed media paintings as visual poetry, created by combining structure, texture, pattern, and color, distilling it into its essential form.
The textured surfaces are made by creating a collage of embossed paper and layering of acrylic paint, and I prefer to continue the paintings around the edge of the gallery-wrapped canvases, incorporating the sculptural shape of the canvas to move the image into space.
I work on the edge of abstraction and figuration, on the border of what is seen and what is felt. Standing in front of the vastness of the oceans and the massiveness of the mountains, knowing that these formidable forces of nature need my protection as much as they protect me, leaves me humbled and inspired.
