Anne-François de Sérilly | Artist Profile Photo
Anne-François de Sérilly
Paris, Ile de France, France
Artist Anne-François de Sérilly paints scenes of high culture from his home studio overlooking the rooftops in the 16th arrondissement of Paris. His works portray a night at the art deco theater, card games, and the world of fashion with the ambiance of the 1930s. Growing up, Anne-François’s grandfather was a portraitist, and Anne-François himself painted his first portrait at age 10. After majoring in Finance, he stepped off the business path before him and decided to pursue fine art. He cultivated his artistic ideals looking at the great masters of the 17th and 18th centuries, and then spent five years in Brazil where he absorbed the colors and boldness into his style. The artist shares, “I continue to apply myself to the pursuit of an ideal. I sacrificed everything for my work, it's more important to me than anything else.” When he is not in his studio, he spends time with his wife and five children, practices advanced martial arts, and dances tango.

Artist Statement

I have devoted my entire life to making art. My main interest is the better side of human nature, so my work is entirely figurative. Dance, cards, theater, circus, haute couture, and the sea are some of my ongoing themes. It’s an ideal world I’ve created, where couples’ tender dialogue is eternal and feminine grace is abundant. Courtship interests me, the initial opposition and subsequent unification between the man and the woman is eternally powerful and increasingly taken for granted today. Whereas in life we often hide our sentiments to ease our social interactions, my figures express themselves brazenly with their bodies, their faces becoming obsolete. There's a touch of humor in many of my paintings. I am a perfectionist in constant pursuit of harmony.
