About this artwork

One of my favorite things to paint in the winter is a bare, well-aged tree. An old tree is kind of the lion of the forest, meaning it's majestic in size and stature. Compositionally, I like to position these trees like you would a portrait, even painting the entire background first before working on the tree itself. In this way, I can more successfully bring out the important qualities of the tree form. This piece is painted on heavyweight professional watercolor paper with a 1-inc white border.
