About this artwork

The inspiration for this painting came from lyrics of a song by one of my favorite musicians, Bruce Cockburn. He wrote song where he describes a nocturnal walk with a friend and he describes the way the street lights cause the shadows to shorten into little black pools, then elongate behind. In my painting the setting is an alley in Hoboken, NJ. I was also inspired by a painting by Sargent that depicts a young woman walking down an alley. The architecture here reminded me of Dutch painters.
