About this artwork

This is the corner of a yard of a gîte in Provence, where I love to stay. The gîte, which is a self-catering cottage, is on the grounds owned by a sculptor and his wife, and the grounds are large, and the views are extensive, so they have given me lots of scope for paintings. I use brushes and one particular palette knife. The palette knife can give texture by layering or making marks. It pulls the color onto canvas differently than a brush does. A brush may combine colors as it moves, a palette knife can drag the colors along without mixing them, so it may produce a more varied patch of color. Sometimes I use the knife to scrape the color into the canvas—the color gets pushed into the white canvas, producing some glowing jewel undertones.
