New UGallery Artist: Brian Sostrom
Brian Sostrom’s paintings of water and sky are not your typical picturesque seascapes. They use moody dark blue hues combined with a soft atmospheric sense of light to create something mysterious and mesmerizing.
Painting with acrylic on both sides of a Plexiglas panel, Brian uses this clear surface to achieve a pronounced sense of depth and a translucent quality in the scenes. The cropped, square-format compositions do not depict distinct places, but rather seek to elicit a personal emotional response.
Looking into the ripples of waves disappearing into a soft horizon, or the obscure, agitated clouds, there is an impression of both emptiness and eternity. Brian was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest, and his paintings are clearly inspired by the natural beauty of the region.
