Darlene McElroy, One Unforgettable Summer
Each week, we introduce new works to the UGallery collection. It’s easy to browse through all these gorgeous works but it’s also nice to stop and spend time with a specific piece.
In honor of Mother’s Day coming soon, we chose to look at a piece that reminds us of childhood. Darlene McElroy’s One Unforgettable Summer feels like a scrapbook page taken from a summer album. The mixed media piece incorporates a lot of different elements but it’s the boys hugging in the center that remind us of beach days during summer break. We can almost smell the sunscreen!
Darlene describes her piece:
There is nothing like the joy of summer fun — water sports, children laughing and family time. My grandmother’s recipe is collaged on to the art.
We love the soft floral pattern over the whole piece. On the left, it looks like a piece of a stamped letter has been glued beneath a photo of a boy on a canoe. These details remind us of summer camp, too — sending letters home and experiencing the outdoors. Mom probably sat at home waiting for a letter to hear about these adventures.
